We were fortunate to have the NZ Marist U21 Rugby Team come and visit us on Tuesday morning, armed with boxes of goodies (ie. sports equipment) for our school.
Some of the team members spoke to the children about values and how they apply to all walks of life, including on the rugby field. One special member of the team was Brad Collins, an ex South School pupil. The team performed both their haka and team song for us. Our own Kapa Haka group replied with their haka and we finished with the school waiata. The class was given a scenario whereby one of their tramping party had seriously injured themselves and so it was up to the rest of the group to create a stretcher and carry them out of the bush to where help was waiting. In groups of 4, the children had to plan, create and construct their stretcher. The completed stretchers ... Tnen came the test! Would the stretchers be strong enough to carry the patient ( 8kg of potatoes) over the obstacle course to safety? Let's just say, while most patients did make it to saftey, there were a few that weren't quite so lucky!!! Unfortunately, there are not photos of all the teams on the obstacle course. Mrs R got so carried away timing the teams and cheering them on, she forgot about the camera in her pocket. Apologies to those who missed out. A great challenge = lots of fun, loads of laughs and amazing teamwork.
Well done everyone! Some great discussions took place in our room this afternoon, as children discussed ways of reducing the amount of rubbish produced in Room 1/2.
Mrs S and Mrs R were super impressed with the way everyone interacted within their groups and the respectful way in which ideas were shared and discussed. Some great ideas were presented, so ...WATCH THIS SPACE! Congratulations to these people from Mrs Sara's maths group who have passed all their times table tests. According to Mrs S, they now know all their tables 'inside out and backwards!'
A great effort from all of you. Congratulations yet again to more children from our room who are in representative teams.
